Graphic for 2025 TIIMSA GatheringThe last time United Methodist Transitional Intentional Interim Ministry Specialists gathered from across the nation in person was in 2019 because of the 2020 COVID pandemic! Since then we have been meeting virtually, focusing on such themes as “Courage for Change” and “Embracing the NEXT Normal.”

The theme for this year was “Preaching in a Time of Transition and Grief, A Study of the Gospel of Mark” led by Rev. Dr. O. Wesley Allen Jr., the Lois Craddock Professor of Homiletics at Southern Methodist University Perkins School of Theology.

This year’s theme was chosen to address the current high anxiety in American culture in general and the specific experience of grief in many of our local congregations, especially in the midst of decline and disaffiliation. It was also chosen because “Preaching in the Interim” is a major section of the TIIMS Training Seminar and this aspect of our calling has not been a focus of the annual TIIMSA Gatherings in years. The Seminar curriculum notes that trained interims “assist their congregation in a structured process of transition. During that transition, what do we say from the pulpit?” Our Gathering in September was designed to help you answer that question for your current situation.

In approaching that objective, Dr. Allen effectively brought his distinctive approach as a homiletics professor to this task, as well as his primary research interests on preaching and the Synoptic Gospels, in particular, the Gospel of Mark. He has noted that Mark can be viewed “as a parable that twists the story of Jesus known to the original readers in order to offer them a new understanding of Jesus and discipleship.” After all, this first gospel was written for the first generation of Christians in their chaotic time to convey what Dr. Allen calls the “implications of experiencing God’s glory, power, judgment, grace, love, and calling in the world, often in response to crises and trauma that occurred in/to the community of faith.” Isn’t this the Good News that we can offer our congregations, as well?

It was an exciting time for the attendees to finally have an opportunity to meet in person again for fellowship and continuing education. We also honed our skills as transitional specialists through the three workshops that were offered.

MORE ABOUT TIIMSA:
Advocating for Interim Ministry in The United Methodist Church

For more than 25 years, the Transitional Intentional Interim Ministry Specialists Association (TIIMSA) has served as the professional organization for training and credentialing United Methodist pastors for Intentional Interim Ministry. In fact, the excellent training in conflict management, family systems, and best practices insights can be applied to any local church appointment. TIIMSA also plans the annual national Gathering for further development and support of TIIMS through continuing education, learning new tools, inspiration, and fellowship. For all except the last four years, it was an in-person event at different locations rotating among the five jurisdictions of the United Methodist Church. However, after the pandemic, our events have been virtual with these outstanding presenters:

  • 2021 – “Courage for Change” with Dr. Gil Rendle
  • 2022 – “Leading Through a LIMINAL SEASON” with Rev. Susan Beaumont
  • 2023 – “Embracing the NEXT Normal” with Rebekah Simon-Peter, and last year in
  • 2024 – “The Future of INTERIM MINISTRY in the UMC” with Dr. Lovett Weems
